Kintsugi Pottery is an ancient technique of embracing flaws and imperfections in a piece by repairing and finishing with gold (or another precious metal) to raise the piece to a higher, more refined and valuable level. The underlying symbolic message is one of transformation…as it expresses out ability to rise above our imperfections and challenges, through resiliency and healing to attain rebirth and a higher state of being. A glaze irregularity this urn was filled with gold in the kintsugi method. I threw this piece on the wheel and then hand carved the lotus flower fineal on the lid before putting it through the multi-step Crystalline process. The Lotus flower was made as an offering and is symbolic of serenity, sweetness and transformation. Crystalline glazing is a particularly beautiful and equally involved process. The pieces are brought to a high temperature quickly in the kiln and then soaked at a slightly lower temperature to allow for the special crystals to form from the zinc “seeds” in the glaze. A special “pedastal” must be made for each piece to catch the glaze as it runs down the vase. When removed from the kiln the piece must be carefully separated from the pedastal and then the foot is ground smooth. The fluid glaze often runs onto the underside of the lid and must be ground down with a diamond bit as well. Each piece has a clear, interior liner glaze. Crystals sparkle like snowflakes when displayed in natural or under bright lights. The lid can be temporarily sealed with museum wax or permanently sealed with an epoxy glue.
