I threw this piece on the wheel before putting it through the multi-step Crystalline process and then applying gold in the Kintsugi method. Crystalline glazing is a particularly beautiful but equally involved process. The pieces are brought to a high temperature quickly in the kiln and then soaked at a slightly lower temperature to allow for the special crystals to form from the zinc “seeds” in the glaze. A special “pedastal” must be made for each piece to catch the glaze as it runs down the piece. Because the glaze is so runny, many times the largest proportion of crystals and color remain on the lid where it is less likely to run down. Then the piece must be carefully separated from the pedastal and the the foot is ground smooth. Many times glaze drips on the under side of the lid must also be ground away. Unfortunately photographs often don’t capture the exquisite beauty of Crystalline where the crystals sparkle like snowflakes when displayed in natural or under bright lights. The lid can be temporarily sealed with museum wax or permanently sealed with an epoxy glue.
