This special piece was created as a prayer pot, funeral urn or simply as a decorative art piece for your home. I created it to hold a small tea light candle to be used during a special ceremony or for reflective moments. It can be lit for the Memorial or Celebration of Life service or on special occasions such as an anniversary or birthday to honor and celebrate the memory of a loved one. It can also hold written intentions and messages to a loved one or house sacred or special objects. I threw this piece on the wheel, bisque fired it and then glazed it with a Copper raku glaze and fired it in a gas kiln. At a precise temperature it was quickly pulled and “reduced” in a trash can to produce the elemental effects. The dynamics of reduction (pulling oxygen out of the glaze in the trash can environment) creates a myriad of beautiful colors along with the copper. Irregularities (slight surface marks) in the glaze often occur and are caused by the organic materials in the fire and tong marks used to bring the piece to the can for reduction. These are an integral part of the natural beauty of raku. This process also creates significant thermal shock that often leaves separation cracks or lines in the piece. Sometimes the separation heals itself (walls reseal) and other times it is reinforced from the inside with a ceramic epoxy and then filled with a precious metal such as gold or copper. This Kintsugi method of repair is an ancient technique of embracing flaws and imperfections, raising it to a higher level and increasing the value. The underlying symbolic message is one of transformation…as it expresses out ability to rise above our imperfections and challenges, through resiliency and healing to attain rebirth and a higher state of being. Raku pottery is magical! The colors can shift abit after cooling from the fire and should not be stored in direct sunlight. 2 tea light candles are included with the
