I threw this piece on the wheel and then hand carved the lotus flower fineal on the lid. The Lotus flower was made as an offering and is symbolic of serenity, sweetness and transformation. Pit firing is a magical unglazed ceramic process whereby all the colors are produced in a pit in the ground when organic materials catch fire and produce atmospheric effects as the organics swirl and create unique patterns of smoke and color in the pots. This is one of my favorite processes for cremation urns as the effects are cosmic and often resemble nebulae of the heavens. The lid can be temporarily sealed with museum wax or permanently sealed with an epoxy glue.
